Big Five personality test

The Big Five describes personality with five traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism (OCEAN). Each is a scale, not a box. Most people sit somewhere in the middle of most of them, and that’s the point: it tells you how much, not which type.

About this test

This test uses the 50 IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers, a public-domain set of questions from the International Personality Item Pool, used in hundreds of studies. Answer for how you usually are, not how you’d like to be.

Questions people ask

Is this the official Big Five test?

There isn’t one official test. The Big Five is a model, measured by many questionnaires. This one uses the IPIP 50-item markers, which are free, public domain and well studied.

Are my scores compared with other people?

No. Each score is how far along its scale your answers put you, from 0 to 100. A percentile would compare you with a sample of other people, which needs norms this page doesn’t have.

Can my scores change?

Yes, slowly. Across adulthood most people become more conscientious and agreeable and less neurotic. Your mood on the day also moves a score a few points, so don’t read much into small differences.
