Privacy
The short version: we keep what you write here because judging it is the product, we never sell it or use it for advertising, and you can take all of it or delete all of it from your account page at any time.
What we keep
- Your account: your email address, and your name if you give one. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email, name and profile picture from Google and nothing else.
- What you write: the goals you type, your answers to the opening questions, your answers to checks, how sure you said you were before each one was marked, the guesses you make before reading a section, questions you ask your tutor, and the name you give it; and, if you make a plan, the date you’re working towards, what it is, and when, where and for how long you said you’d study — and, if you ask for a reminder, the time you chose and your time zone, so it arrives when you meant.
- What we conclude from it: which ideas each answer showed, which wrong ideas it named, how much help each of your tutor’s replies gave (from a nudge to a full explanation), your review schedule, and the observations on your “How you learn” page — each of which quotes back what you wrote.
- Usage and cost: a ledger of each action that called a model and what it cost, which is how free and member allowances are measured.
- Payments: if you become a member, your subscription status and our payment provider’s customer reference. We never see or store your card.
Who processes it
- AI model providers. To ask you questions, write lessons, grade answers and reply as the tutor, the relevant text — the topic you asked about, your answers, the passage you’re reading — is sent to the model providers we use (currently Google’s Gemini models, reached through OpenRouter). It’s sent to get a reply. We use paid API access, whose terms don’t allow the provider to train its models on what we send.
- Resend sends our emails: your sign-in codes and, if you leave them on, review reminders.
- Dodo Payments is the merchant of record for memberships and handles your card and billing details.
- Google, only if you choose “Continue with Google” to sign in.
- Our hosting and database providers, who store it on our behalf.
What other people can see
Nothing, by default. Your courses, answers and reminders are yours. If you publish a finished course, its lessons and the mistakes it covers become public — but never your answers, the reason you gave for wanting it, or your name. Lessons are reused for other learners who need the same thing; a lesson never contains anyone’s answers.
Cookies and storage
One cookie, to keep you signed in. Your browser also remembers whether you chose light or dark mode. No analytics or advertising cookies, no trackers.
Sign-in codes when you ask for one. Review reminders at most once a week, only when something is due; every one has a link that turns them off without signing in, and they can be turned on or off from your account page. Nothing else.
Taking it, and deleting it
From your account page: “Take everything with you” downloads every answer you wrote, every verdict, your schedule and your ledger as JSON. “Delete it all” removes your account and everything unpublished, immediately. A course you published stays readable in Free courses, without your name. If you’re a member, cancel first so you aren’t charged again.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. Deleting it deletes it. Sign-in sessions expire after thirty days without use.
Children
Cognosc is for people aged 16 and over. We don’t knowingly hold accounts for anyone younger.
